Was it wrong to ask band members to help pay for rehearsal studio?

Main Post:

I'm playing a gig with 3 other people, we're not a band, we're practicing just for this gig, and we're not playing anyone's original music. We're gonna be playing some jazz standards at an event.

I was responsible for finding musicians and creating a setlist so I guess it sort of makes me a band leader, but I don't consider myself fully a band leader because I'm not asking the musicians to help me with my original singer-songwriter project, if that makes sense. I got offered a gig, I needed other musicians and I offered them to play with me, the venue is paying us all equally.

I booked a rehearsal space and asked everyone if they could send me some money - I made it clear they didn't have to completely split it with me, but some contribution would be appreciated.

Was it wrong to ask them of that? Am I considered a band leader here and should it have been my responsibility to cover the cost? What's usually the etiquette for paying for rehearsal space?

Top Comment:

It's not wrong.

But ideally, I would have brought up the need for a rehearsal space and splitting the cost if you need to rent one, before actually booking it and asking other band members if they want the gig.

Maybe hindsight is 20/20.

How have they responded to it?

Pay structure changing to pay band.

Main Post:

As the title suggests, I have heard that my workplace is changing from GS to a pay band system. Does anyone have any experience or info on this, not sure if I should be concerned about this change.

I’m in payband system. It’s been great for me. This sub hates paybands.. once I made a post about it and it quickly turned into a sh*show. For me, a hard worker with a good attitude, I’ve gotten raises that have more than doubled step increases since I joined in 2016. Many complain about favoritism - I don’t see that at my agency. I’d be happy.

Here's our internal salary bands

Main Post:

I wanted to share the internal base salary bands for my last company. YOE would determine the level, then how well you interview would determine where you landed in the level.

Level 0 - Associate/Junior SWE - $80-100k

Level 1 - SWE - $100-135k, 0-2 YOE

Level 2 - Senior SWE - $125-165k, 2-3 YOE

Level 3 - Lead SWE - $150-195k, 3-6 YOE

Level 4 - Staff SWE - $175-220k, 4-7 YOE

Level 5 - Senior Staff SWE - $200-250k, 6+ YOE

Level 6 - Principal SWE - $225-280k, 8+ YOE

This is a good reference point for the average VC funded startup. Good product-market fit, but not hyper-growth and hiring 100s of people a year. My startup was based in NYC, but hired 100% remote. Levels used to be 3-4 years but are trending towards 1-2 years with all the job hopping and demand for talent.

Happy to answer any questions about how levels work.

I hope this encourages people to look for new jobs if they are underpaid.

Salary Negotiation - top of pay band

Main Post:

Hi, I've been offered a internal position at my current place of work (sysadmin/DevOps focusing in AWS/Azure). It would have additional responsibilities with a OnCall shift 1 week (time and half paid extra), every 9 weeks. They offered 88k, the top of the band is 90k for this position. I currently have 3 weeks of vacation. They required someone with minimum 2 years experience, I have a total of 3yrs. There are no other candidates, this is a preferred hire, no interviews, I've met with the team and Director many many times already

Market rates for this role are roughly 94-96k. I do not want to go into the next band as this would require a management aspect to this technical position. I was thinking of counter offering with 91-93k. They know my salary as this is a internal transfer, I'm planning to settle on 90k. Bands are there to limit salaried, however they can be extended to go over the max cap

My plan was to frame it as:

Although the market rates are 94-96k, I would be willing to accept a reduction in salary to 91 - 93k with a additional 1 week of vacation added.

Anyone have any tips for negotiating when at the top of your pay bands? Is it advised to push to the max band offering?

Edit** they already know my current salary, and have offered 6.5% increase for this offer which still being below market rate. Should also note this is for a fairly large known corporation

Just to be clear:

You’re negotiating $2k/year. With 26 or 24 paychecks/year in typical tech companies, you’re really negotiating $75-83/check before taxes, maybe $56-62/check after taxes.

  • You already work there
  • They already know what you can do
  • They based their very near the top of the band

I’m not telling you not to negotiate, but it seems like a frustrating negotiation for everyone if you push this. For $56.
